Designer Thomas Fuchs is entering the retail arena for the first time in a partnership with Barneys New York. Formerly a furniture designer at Quatrain and Donghia, Fuchs runs a lighting company Otium, and this Fall will launch a line of tabletop designs that will begin selling at Barneys Beverly Hills, Dallas, and Chicago and New York flagship.
EditorTV host Jason Oliver Nixon interviews Thomas Fuchs at ALT for Living.
The line will include glassware, barware and candlesticks in four distinct collections titled Remains, Moderne, Candle Holders and Glasses.
The collections employ traditional artistic processes such as lost wax, glass blowing and hand carving to create a sophisticated design aesthetic.
Inspired by the organic shapes of skulls and bones, the Remains collection includes a skull motif ice bucket carved from a solid piece of Makrana marble, a crystal skull bottle stopper and nickel drink stirrers fashioned after femur bones.
The Glasses collection features surfaces that mimic textile patterns, soft rounded shapes and the pure colors of nature’s palette. A candlestick design is reversible and can be used from either end.
Fuchs studied fine arts at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. as well as the Art Student League and the National Academy of Design in New York City. His love for furniture and the decorative arts led him to pursue a career in fine arts auctions with C. G. Sloan in Washington, after which he joined the firm of Butterfield and Butterfield in San Francisco as a furniture specialist and appraiser. After his time as a private dealer, he co-created the Quatrain furniture collection. Donghia then hired him as their Director of Design Development for furniture. Fuchs is the founder and designer for his signature collection, Otium, which is produced in Murano, Italy and features neo classical chandeliers, glass lamps, vases and candlesticks. He is now further expanding his creativity with the introduction of Thomas Fuchs Creative.
