Recap from London’s 35th annual Decorex show

Posted on Tuesday, October 16, 2012.

Attendance was up 8% from 2011 at Decorex International last month, as the show celebrated its 35th anniversary. The four-day event, held on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, hosted over 11,000 guests this year. The increase demonstrates a growing interest in luxury design and interiors, according to organizers.

Here are some highlights from this year:

Vivienne Westwood Entrance

The entrance design featured mannequins wearing Vivienne Westwood dresses made from her new wallpaper designs with Cole & Son. The entrance also featured three magnolia silk rugs that were designed for The Rug Company.

Christopher Guy’s 27-foot-high sculptural tower consisted of 270 individually hand-carved pieces from his collection which could be seen from every angle of Decorex’s marquee.

Other memorable exhibits included Andrew Martin’s set from the movie Prometheus; Fromental’s re-creation of a Scholar’s Studio designed by Master Wang, Best & Lloyd’s glass orbs by Anthony Critchlow; Martin Ephson and Tom Helme’s Fermoie collection at Luke Irwin’s stand; and Mikhail Pietranek’s design for the Royal Warrant Holders Association.

Decorex Panel

Decorex also hosted a seminar program where major industry names such as Min Hogg, Nicky Haslam, Nina Campbell, William Yeoward, Ben Pentreath, Ashley Hicks, Veere Greeney and Angus Gibson discussed and debated a wide range of subjects and ideas.

Another important part of Decorex was the prestigious Decorex Awards, which recognize design excellence among the 300 plus exhibitors.

Barnocelli Design

Decorex’s Best New Exhibitor was awarded to Lapicida, the French Furniture Industry received Decorex’s Best International Exhibitor award, and Decorex’s Outstanding Contribution was awarded to Baroncelli.

De Le Cuona Design

Other magazine awards included The World of Interiors’ Award for Excellence which went to Lapicida; Tom Faulkner was awarded House & Garden’s Most Stylish Product; FX’s Best Contemporary Design went to Cox London; BIID’s Best Design Award went to De Le Cuona; Locker & Riley were awarded English Home’s Best in British Craftsmanship while Bill Bennette received Nicolas Feuillatte’s Outstanding Contribution to the Industry Award.

This year’s judges were Deborah Barker, Editor of Homes & Gardens and 25 Beautiful Homes, Lucia van der Post, FT columnist and freelance journalist and interior designer, Bill Bennette.

Next year’s Decorex International will take place from Sept. 22 – 25 2013. For more information and to register, click here.
