The Center for Architecture (AIA New York Chapter) introduced two brand new exhibits to the public yesterday. They focus on contemporary educational needs, school architecture and how to combine the two. The exhibition also brings a new perspective to the digital revolution’s effect on education and how architecture is adapting to changes in technology.

“Designing schools for 21st century pedagogy has many challenges,” said Joseph Aliotta, AIA, LEED AP, 2012 New York President.  “School design is also one of the most important building types in many architectural firm portfolios.”



Avenues: The World School

“Edgeless School: Design for Learning” will be on view from October 1 – January 19 and “Best School in the World: Seven Finnish Examples from 21st Century” from October 1 – October 31, in New York.



The East Harlem School

The exhibitions will look at the needs of schools of all kind from public to private, urban to rural and for special needs students. It also looks at Finnish schools, where students have been top performers in recent international learning assessments.

“Perhaps in no other building type do broad societal concerns about the future and the needs of today’s techno-savvy children coincide with design issues more dramatically than K-12 schools,” said exhibition curator Thomas Mellins.
